Structural Characteristics and Renovation Techniques of Modular Container Homes
The renovation process for movable container homes transforms industrial shipping containers into living spaces.
Container Structure: An Extension of the High-Strength Frame
Originally designed to carry cargo, containers feature a frame with excellent structural performance:
● Frame Composition: The container consists of corner posts, bottom beams, top beams, and corrugated steel side walls. The corner posts serve as the primary load-bearing components, while the corrugated side walls enhance bending stiffness
● Stacking Capability: Corner fittings are installed at the four corners of the container, allowing connection to upper-level containers or lifting equipment to enable multi-level stacking or overall lifting
● Wall Opening Restrictions: The side walls are load-bearing components; cutting large openings requires the addition of reinforcing beams and columns around the perimeter to transfer the load to the frame system
Thermal Insulation: A Key Renovation for Residential Use
Standard shipping containers are bare metal structures with high thermal conductivity and require insulation before they can be used as living spaces:
● Insulation Materials: Apply sprayed polyurethane foam, extruded polystyrene boards, or rock wool boards to the interior walls of the container to reduce heat transfer. Different materials vary in fire resistance ratings and thickness.
● Vapor Barrier: Install a moisture-proof membrane on the inner side of the insulation layer to prevent indoor moisture from penetrating and condensing within the insulation.
● Interior and Exterior Finishes: Cover interior walls with drywall, wood paneling, or color-coated steel panels to enhance living comfort; exterior walls can retain the original corrugated metal industrial aesthetic or be clad with siding to alter the appearance.
Door and Window Openings: Introducing Natural Light and Ventilation
Residential functionality requires a rational layout of doors and windows in shipping containers:
● Selection of opening locations: Prioritize installing doors and windows on non-load-bearing walls (such as end walls) to minimize the reduction in overall structural rigidity
● Reinforcement: Rectangular steel tubes or channel steel must be welded around the perimeter of door and window openings to serve as reinforcing frames, ensuring structural stability after cutting
● Sealing and Waterproofing: Use sealing strips and weatherproof sealant at the joints between doors, windows, and the container body to prevent rainwater infiltration
Interior Finishing: Creating Functional Spaces
The interior of the renovated shipping container must be divided into functional zones and equipped with infrastructure:
● Electrical and Plumbing Lines: Embed electrical conduits, water supply pipes, and drain pipes before installing insulation; ensure that the routing of these lines avoids structural reinforcements.
● Bathroom Waterproofing: Install a seamless waterproof base or apply waterproof coating in the bathroom area to prevent leaks from affecting the container below.
● Floor Treatment: Install a waterproof layer, insulation layer, and finish material (such as laminate flooring or tiles) over the existing floor to improve underfoot comfort and thermal insulation.
The renovation process for movable container homes transforms industrial shipping containers into living spaces. Proper structural reinforcement and insulation design are essential for ensuring the safety and comfort of the living space.
